Kalabagh Project Scrapped! No Water, No Electricity!

Raja Pervez Ashraf yesterday proudly announced the scrapping of the Kalabagh dam project in view of the un-ending differences among the different provinces.

My point of view on this is that regardless of the differences that existed, the government should have found an alternative to calm all the opposed parties down and continue with the project as it was critical for the water shortage and electricity shortage that we face.

Pakistan, it is expected, would be declared a 'barren' state by 2012 if sufficient water reservoirs are not developed. We already face a severe shortage of electricity.

I don't find it anything to be proud of if you're scrapping a project so necessary for Pakistan's future. I am not saying that the difference of opinion should have been disregarded, but an alternative should have been found!

We as a nation are pulling ourselves backward, and we will have nobody to blame when we reach a point in time when the entire country would be struggling for water and electricity!

A government that crumbles under pressure to keep everyone happy is not what we need, a government's role is to take bold steps for the larger interest of the Pakistani nation, and not to keep all parties happy!
