Has the MQM ditched its allies?Category: Articles/Opinion Written by: Ammar (on March 23, 2008 - 01:09 AM)E-Mail Article to a Friend
After Asif Ali Zardari approached the head of the Muttahida Qaumi Movement on telephone, it was decided that Dr. Farooq Sattar will not stand in the race for premiership as the consensus opposition candidate. Instead, the MQM has now announced full support to the PPPP for the Prime Minsterial election in the National Assembly. The MQM will vote in favour of the PPPP candidate. But have they ditched their allies, the PML-Q? Will they lose their friendship with President Pervez Musharraf? These questions have been boggling my mind eversince this announcement was made. The PML-Q on the other hand have decided not to allow the PPPP to go ahead and have a clean sweep. They will be fielding their nominee in. The MQM obviously has its interests in mind. A possible power brokerage with the PPPP means they can continue to work freely and have all the priveleges in Karachi that they had during the PML-Q rule. A deal with the PPPP is the best solution to avoid any interference in Karachi/Hyderabad affairs. It will also provide the MQM a chance and another 5 years in peace to continue their country wide expansion. Time will tell what this announcement means for th PML-Q and President Pervez Musharraf. Is it a one time support? Will this support continue? Let us see how things turn out and how Makhdoom Yusuf Raza Gilani leads the government. We as the people of Pakistan will keep our fingers crossed! Share your thoughts by posting a Talk-Back:
