The Pakistani People's Party has declared Syed Yusuf Raza Gilani as their Prime Ministerial candidate and he is likely to be elected through Parliament on Monday.

On the other hand, PPP stalwart Makhdoon Amin Fahim, a strong prime ministerial contender, on Saturday night said he had no plans to quit the party after another Bhutto loyalist Yousuf Raza Gillani pipped him in the race for the top post.

Yousuf Raza born on June 9, 1952 in an influential family of Multan. His father was descendant of Syed Musa Pak, a leading spiritual figure of Multan who had hailed from Iranian province of Gilan. One of Gillani's aunts (sister of his mother) is the wife of Pir Pagara.

Gillani graduated in 1970 and got MA Journalism from Punjab University in 1976. After that he went to ENGLAND for his master degree.

Yousuf Raza Gillani began his political journey from the platform of Pakistan Muslim League during Zia's martial law in 1978. He joined the Muslim League's Central Working Committee. After a short stint with the Muslim League, Gillani become part of the Pakistan Peoples Party in 1988 and has since remained PPP's loyal and steadfast supporter.

Gillani was arrested in February 2001 over charges of misuse of authority. Gillani spent nearly six years in prison. His imprisonment was widely condemned by various people across the country including Syed Mushahid Hussain who is a senior leader of the PML-Q. He wrote a book while in prison and the book was well received across the country. He has been nominated as prime Minister of Pakistan by the PPPP now.

He has also been speaker of the National Assembly once.
