Aitzaz Ahsan: Freed & Arrested Again

President of the Supreme Court Bar Association, Aitzaz Ahsan was yesterday freed and it is reported that he has been put under house arrest again. The government of Punjab had freed him yesterday. He had come out in public and addressed the people who were there to celebrate his release.

To the people, he said: ‘I am thankful to the representatives of civil society, doctor, lawyers, businessmen, women and men who came up for my release and have been staying back to support me.’

Aitzaz also said that a Punjab government official came with a piece of paper and asked him to write some word of apology that elections are over and that ‘I will not undertake any political activity.’ The request was rejected and he said ‘The day of everybody’s freedom is coming up.’

This morning, it was learnt that the government has put him under house arrest again till the transfer of power to the next government takes place. Aitzaz Ahsan had demanded the freedom of judiciary by the 9th of March and has cautioned the government of a long march on the 9th if the judiciary is not freed.

Blockades have been placed near his house and all entrance points have been blocked. Heavy contingents of police have been deployed.

Meanwhile lawyers in Karachi have been beaten up and arrested by the Police. Tear gas and shells were thrown at the crowd. Heavy contingents of Police have surrounded the Karachi City Courts for more arrests.

Police have arrested nine lawyers included Saeed Qureshi, Riaz Afandi, Sathi Ishaq, Jahangir Ranjo, Yousuf Zai, Syed Fateh Ali Shah and Irfan Ali. The area has been completely cordoned off for more arrests.
