Hazaaron saal nargis apni be-noori pe roti hai..

E-Mail Article to a Friend

When reading Tulo-e-Islam by Iqbal I came across the following lines.

“Hazaaron saal nargis apni be-noori pe roti hai..
bari mushkil sey hota hai chaman mein deedawar paida!”

It impressed me so much that I read them again and again. Who else can write such a beautiful poem other than Iqbal. What was going through his mind when he wrote these two lines? Or he might be thinking of those rulers which did not value their common people (nargis i.e narcissus) but he actually did not know that after some years these lines would actually fit his dreamed nation.

Yes, we Pakistanis are living a chaotic life, here by Pakistanis I mean those poor and depressed people who cannot even quench their hunger.

To describe the reasons why Pakistan is not among the developed countries and why the common people are still not satisfied, it is a long discussion.

Let’s discuss the one aspect of this story:

Over the last 60 years, Army rules this country approximately 36 years. I think people coming in the Military force are trained for the following things:

  • How to take over the country when the present govt blind trust you?
  • How to switch your job from Chief of Army Staff to President of Pakistan?
  • How to involve in politics and join a political force?

Army usually took over the command of this country saying the political rulers are not sincere; they are corrupt; the country is in the state of political chaos and thus they started ruling the country. Some times it was called Marshal Law and some times declaring emergency, they adapted their so called mission -to move the country from chaos to stability.

Unfortunately we still are in a state of chaos and the old Army professional or better to call him a candidate of Muslim League (Q) trying to move this country in a stable state. Analyzing the current Military rule, from last eight or nine years we are in worst conditions.

“Hamey tou shayad roti bhi khaanay nahi dain gain agar phir sa Army aai”
(We won’t be able to eat bread if the Army took over this country again).

This is the reply of a typical Pakistani when I asked him about the next elections.

Further elaborating he told me:“I am a daily wager, having two children (third not allowed if following the govt rules) working under a contractor and daily gets Rs 200. Children are usually hungry when I go back to home after daily working. Due to the strikes and all I am not even getting my daily wages and living hand to mouth.”

This is one out of those millions of stories of many Pakistani families which are waiting for a miracle to occur in the coming elections and the govt could be successful in providing them bread and butter. I think this government is only for the rich people who become more rich and rich day by day and the poor are getting poor day by day.

These poor Pakistanis are still waiting for a “deedahwar”(according to Iqbal’s couplet) – a person who can bring happiness in their eyes and can raise their  living standard. Let’s hope for that miracle to occur and got those rulers who have eyes to see the actual condition of poor and hungry peoples and count them as nargis. (narcissus).

Shoaib:Unfortunately, We think that Democracy is kind of Magic and after its establishment, the poor people will become rich, come on we all have seen these what had happened in so called elected rulers rule, I am not supporting military govt, but history witnesses that always country is in better condition during these ppls rules, you can see what is level of poverty in india, where not a single military rule is establish country wide. It is not a matter of ARMY RULE OR DEMOCARTIC RULE or whatever, ONLY Allah's defined rule is key for which Hadhrat Umar (RAA) said (dont remember exact words) "if even a dog dies beneath lake of farat because of hunger Umer will held responsible on the day of judgement"

Imran Salahuddin:Umair.. It's a good effort but I do agree with shoaib (at least what he quoted). But unfortunately the ideology behind Pakistan was overruled within 5 years of the establishment by the people who actually were against this ideology. I think, these names do not require any introduction, do they? The ideology was to build an Islamic State where ruling rights are exclusively possessed by Allah and people or the elected personnel are just to establish Quranic System given by Allah. The elected personnel are responsible to perform their duties faithfully and to provide a nourishing system where an individual can grow physically and mentally and then this individual can participate in the society to help others in their growth. At one end, only corrupt personnel are in your choice list to be elected who knows just to grow themselves and on the other end you have so-called muslim scholars who have misinterpreted Islam. What kind of DEEN you expect in a society where DEEN starts from the beard and then ends on the bottom of your pajamas? But that does not mean that you have no responsibilities. If government and scholars are not playing their roles then it will be better to develop yourself and to participate in your society to help others in their development rather than blaming others. Thanks

Umair Khan:@Shoaib: Thanks for writing your opinion “We think that Democracy is kind of magic and after its establishment, the poor people will become rich”, I didn’t say that. I discussed only one aspect of that long story in which military played the role of enemy. “But history witnesses that always country is in better condition during these ppls rules” I don’t understand what you want to say here. “Better or bitter”, here what I understand that you are against democracy which was not my discussion point. I didn’t conclude that one aspect of story, so now writing some points to ponder: • Allama Muhammad Iqbal was not only a great poet but he was a true predictor. We have forgotten him, his great work, and his great books. • Secondly, my question here is to the military government supporters that why army is so cautious about politics. Are they given so much power that whenever they want, they suspend the assemblies and apply Marshal Law? • Thirdly I do agree with the last lines you wrote and surely what can I say against that beautiful quotation. May Allah give Pakistani rulers enough intelligence to understand the Islamic rule and try to make this country a true Islamic nation where common people should also be given equal rights and values. Special thanks to Imran, Sehar, Mustafa and Hussain.

Dhirendra:My Dear Brothers. It is simple economics. spend more money on projects that are of importance to nation building and create more meaningful employment. if such projects are successful in creating more revenue then build and maintain a bigger and stronger army. Why spend upto 40% of your GDP on maintaining an ARMY. Be good to yourself & be good to your neighbours(actually your brothers if you could see it). Indians are not against Islam or Muslims.. only if you could see it. Please Please forget this hatred, downsize your army spending - help your poors. BE SENSIBLE, think rationally. I give my respect to Prophet and love to all my muslim brothers and sisters. Yes, Allah is only one and we should only believe in one Allah and yes, Prophet muhaamad showed us the right path. But different civilization calls same allah by different names. Anyway, to spend all your money on military when poors dyeing hungry just because you HATE Indians can't be right.
