Ashura was commemerated yesterday in some parts of the world, and is being commemoated in Pakistan today. The Muslim world on this day stands united in rememberance of the great sacrifice of Imam Husain (a.s), his friends, his family and his children. Ashura sends a strong message to the human race, the difference between right and wrong.

It was a day when good was separated from evil. The message of Ashura should now echo in our hearts and minds when we are going through extremely turbulent times.

"Amr bil maaroof, wa nahi anil munkar", doing of good deeds and stopping the bad ones! This is what Karbala teaches the human race.

Ashura highlights the need to stand up against tyranny and sacrifice for the betterment of the rest of the humanrace. History does not speak of any brave event as the day of Ashura.

Muharram is of course of special significance to the Shia's, but the spirit and valour with which it is commemerated by the Sunni's too is indicative of the deep lying unity of faith amongst the two major sects. Ashura shows us the power of unity.

Going through another blog, I found this beautifully constructing paragraph about the Ashura:

The power of Ashura is not only in the epic events that it commemorates, it is in the narrative of those events, in the symbolisms that we construct. Ultimately, it is in the meanings that we derive from those events.

Muhammad Ali Jinnah, on the 10th of Muharram 1361 A.H (28th January, 1942) said:

There cannot be a better and more illustrious example than that of Husein (a.s) who was the greatest embodiment of courage, conviction and sacrifice and every Mussalman in particular should take the great example of his life and service and follow it.

I hope all Majalis and Ashura processions pass safely throughout Pakistan. May Allah foil any and all terrorist ambitions and let Pakistani's and the Muslim Ummah redeem themselves and unite!
