Happy New Year Karachi

As I pass across the Teen Talwar Road (Khayaban-e-Iqbal) in Karachi at 11:15 pm on December 31st, 2007, I feel the immense, unending silence. The silence that awaits some kind of storm to takeover it.

December 31st is normally a fun night in the city, motor-cyclist - who are a total nuisance without their silencers - from around the city pass this and other adjacent roads to get to the Sea View for celebrating the arrival of New Year in Karachite's way. Normally, everybody dines in to their favorite restaurant in all pockets of city. The city basically is alive.

But I missed all that today. Some say that politics has the reason for it, other would blame the terrorists and miscreants, some point fingers towards the government's inability to secure the city but I think that it is the people of the city who have just lost it all. We have become increasingly afraid of our own shadow and dare not to face the realities. Although, I do not suggest everyone to just compromise their security but somewhere I think we are just too careful at times and don't let the life come out of us.

But that's just me.

Oh and by the way, Have a great year ahead.

Fawwad Hassan:hey.........u dont expect anyone to come out and risk their lives, there is no point of enjoying when the whole city is burning. It will be unfair to blame karachites only, there are other people and factors to be blamed. But this is just my opinion!!! HAPPY NEW YEAR!!

Patriot:Armed mob on the roads and streets, firing at anyone at will, setting cars and other public property a blaze, looting banks, snatching cell phones and other personnel belongings, and to top that all, torching ambulances and breaking into hospitals. Man i don’t blame karachites for hiding in their shells. Being a victim of aftermath of 27th dec suicide attack, i saw with my own eyes the horrific scenes. Nipa, Aladdin, Dalmiah, Johar, Kalapul, even the residential blocks were not spared. Out of all the cities, it is Karachi which is named the “city of lights” (even though it suffers most from power shortage), you know why? Because it is the people who give this city a life. And if karachites decide to take cover, believe that there is something really wrong with the city cause the karachites don’t hide because of few guns shots or something similar. They have seen the worst in the past two decades and know exactly when to be cautions. And this past week I believe that they had every reason to be cautious.
